The law provides that upon death of a married person, the decedents estate will pass to the surviving spouse. Now that you are no longer married, you may wish to visit with an estate planning lawyer to make sure your estate is settled the way you desire.
Post-divorce, additional steps are often required to complete the transfer of property. For example, going to the bank and removing your former spouse's name from an account that was set aside to you in the divorce. Many families forget to follow through.
